One With Nature
A good friend, a beautiful day, a cheeseburger and sitting outside in the fresh air - a perfect lunch. I couldn't get out and go much. I didn't feel all that well and was still somewhat self-conscious with the loss of my hair. For days, I had craved a good and greasy cheeseburger as well as the companionship and convinced this old friend to bring me both.
I was feeling relaxed and truly enjoying my outside lunch and our conversation. The birds were chirping, probably asking us to "please move" as we were sitting too close to the bird feeder for their liking. There were some butterflies to be seen fluttering about - such a beautiful and restful sight.
As we talked, a small butterfly began to fly close, which didn't seem unusual at first. Soon, however, it flew closer and closer and began to circle me and my head. Even though I moved, it didn't seem to be frightened. My friend and I began to talk about how unusual this butterfly's reaction to me was. I had my hands folded in my lap. The silly little yellow butterfly lit on my hands and stayed, fluttering its wings. It was only seconds I am sure, but it seemed longer.
According to Native American folklore, all humans are connected with Mother Earth and have a place in the natural order of the world. But today's frantic pace, with the stress of everyday life, often makes us forget that we are part of nature.
This ever so slight encounter with a tiny butterfly helped me realize that I was and am one with nature. Quite a lesson from such a small creature.
